How to Put Word-of-Mouth Marketing on Multimedia Steroids

March 30th, 2005· Filed Under: General Posts · On-Line & Off-Line Marketing · Small Business and the Internet · Business Blogging · Small Business Technology · Small Business Marketing

It’s the oldest form of marketing in the world, and it’s the most effective. Now, with the technology consumers and business owners have at their fingertips, Word-of-Mouth Marketing (WOMM) can be leveraged for more bottom-line impact than ever before in history.

Online forums; blogs; vblogs (video blogs); moblogs (blogs fed from mobile phones or PDAs); podcasts; and a host of other emerging technologies all combine to put consumer opinion on multimedia steroids.

WOMM is on the move, and this is not subjective analysis either. A 2004 Forrester/Inteliseek study found “recommendations from others” and “consumer opinions posted online” significantly outranked TV, radio, print, and online advertising on the trust scale. Research from Jupiter Research, NOP World, and Capgemini echo this theme as well.

IF you want to succeed in the marketplace of the new millennium, gaining consumers’ trust is critical. With consumers being exposed to more than 3,000 marketing messages per day, trust is essential to overcoming the clutter and noise of traditional interruption advertising. And most importantly for business owners, trust is an undeniable prerequisite for persuasion.

The reality is that, done correctly, WOMM is a solid strategy for effectively attracting highly qualified prospects to your company’s doorstep.

BEWARE though – WOMM is a powerful tool that cuts both ways

Try to deceive or trick the consumer and blog-powered “word wardens” will snap into action. Try to shaft the consumer and search engines will remind the world of your foolish actions for years by ranking the most scathing testimonials at the top of any search for your company name.

There are strategies and techniques that you must learn, and certain rules that you should adhere to – but don’t be afraid to jump in. The information and coaching you need to successfully market in the 21st-century marketplace is available. The bottom line is, you must make WOMM part of your click-and-mortar growth strategy before your competitors do.

How you can start implementing WOMM immediately

There are two simple steps you can take to begin learning how WOMM works and start integrating it in your business.

    1. Dedicate some time each week to be active in online business networks, online communities, and blogs related to your industry or niche. This will begin to give you a feel for the multiplication power that technology and the Internet have on WOMM.

    2. Whether your company is large or small, local or national – you should have your own business blog. This will help you build rapport and trust with consumers by giving them insight into your business operations. It’ll equip you to respond immediately to situations in your company or industry. Plus, a properly structured business blog will help you achieve top search-engine rankings too!

You can learn more about this powerful pair of Word-of-Mouth Marketing Multipliers, and learn how to start putting them to work for you and your small business in this special four-part series at AdvancedBusinessBlogging.com.

Taking action on these steps will allow you to build trust, gain permission, and maximize your leverage of WOMM. And when you develop a click-and-mortar growth strategy that integrates permission-based marketing with WOMM – you’ll catapult your company to a leadership position in your industry or niche.

BEWARE: Internet Phone Services Open Up a Big Scamming Opportunity

March 22nd, 2005· Filed Under: General Posts · Small Business and the Internet · Small Business Technology

There’s a new danger for fraud that internet phone services have opened up. It’s something that you should be aware of as both a consumer, and a small business owner. We’ve had a few members of the Business Owners Coaching Club and one private RPM Business Coaching client already get exposed to these new scams. Luckily none were fleeced for any money or critical private information.

Since part of what we do here at the Business Owners Blog is keep you up-to-date on the positives and negatives of new technology, I felt this was something you definitely needed to be aware of.

The problem is that some Internet phone services allow scam artists to make it appear that they’re calling from another phone number. One client of ours even had a call supposedly come in from their local police department soliciting a donation. This “caller id swap” is a useful trick that enables thieves to drain credit accounts and pose as banks or other trusted authorities.

For more information on this dangerous new practice, and ways you can protect yourself and your business clients, check out this in-depth article: http://www.bizreport.com/news/8774/

If You Can Set The Rules, You’ll Win The Game of Small Business Ownership

March 18th, 2005· Filed Under: Small Business Start up · Business Owner's Mindset · Socratic Business Innovation · Building Your Financial Fortress

To win in any game, you have to know the rules first, right? Then you have to play by those rules and improve your performance within those parameters. This is true in every sports game we play. But it’s not true in the game of business ownership.

Business is the only game in life where YOU can set the rules. As a matter of fact, if you’ve structured your business on other people’s rules – you’re bound to fall far short of your full potential. That’s because other people have set the rules to play to their strengths, not yours.

Success in business begins with deciding the game you want to play, and how you want to play it. Personal fulfillment starts with consciously deciding things like what positions you’ll personally fill on the business team, and what you’ll outsource.

Why are so many entrepreneurs and business owners miserable, unfulfilled or eeking out miniscule profits?

It’s because they haven’t ever taken the time to view their business in this light. They’re playing a game where other people made the rules. They’re at the mercy of the rules they never had any input in setting, and even worse – rules that can change at any time without warning. (Remember, rules are basically limitations.)

Now I know some of you might be thinking, “Come on J.P., there ARE some rules in business that must be adhered to.” And to that I would agree, but the key word is “some” not all. These would be the common rules of honesty, integrity, and customer-centric service, along with the golden and platinum rule. The rules I’m talking about are all the other ones that are blindly followed in your industry without any significant critical thought.

Beware of the “everyone does it this way” trap

Too many business owners think just because companies within their industry have always done things a certain way, that’s the way they have to run their company. Unfortunately that type of approach will only get you the same results other men and women in your industry are getting – average, or below average results.

I’ll share a personal example with you from one of my past businesses to help illustrate this point.

When I was 24, running my second business (a landscape design-and-build company) I remember sitting in a seminar sponsored by an industry association. One of the speakers was presenting a workshop on improving sales skills. About half way into the presentation he let loose with a comment that I’ll never forget.

After discussing the average annual gross income of several other industries he said in a matter-of-fact way — “After all, none of you got into this industry to become a millionaire. If you did, you’re in the wrong business.”

I sat back, STUNNED that someone would make such a comment and said to myself, “No way that’s true. It can be done.” I didn’t realize it then, but I was doing what I had done for years – I was setting my own rules. I spoke up and stated my view of how hypocritical it was for him as a “sales trainer” to be saying such things. But I didn’t make much headway with him.

What I did, however, is leave from that seminar more determined than ever to prove that it could be done. You can break the conventional paradigm of any industry.

Why getting motivated to set your own rules is critical

In just over seven years – I spun off a second company and designed both companies to serve specialized niches. These were businesses built consciously on my rules. Businesses that generated substantial cash flow that I then used to purchase over a million dollars in real estate.

In the two years following that achievement, we sold both businesses (for more capital and cash flow) and I started the international small business coaching company RPM Success Group Inc. with my gorgeous wife (and partner.) Best of all we relocated to the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii where we now coach other small business owners how to transform their businesses and create their ideal lifestyles too.

I don’t share this with you to impress you, but rather to impress upon you the importance of setting your own rules. My rules allowed me to break free from the constraints that so many business owners in that industry are still trapped by.

How to make the shift and start setting your own rules

It’s not that you have to make a shift in industries. (I did it for personal/lifestyle reasons, but after I had proved the conventional paradigm in that industry wrong.) The shift you need to make is in your mind, in your thinking about what it is you do – right now where you are at in your business and life.

In my work as a business coach I see this tendency to conform to the “conventional” mindset in every industry. Just look around at what the majority of other business owners are doing in your industry, and listen to how much they complain or blame things on outside influences, like “the economy” instead of reengineering how they run their business.

It’s the same in every industry, niche, or profession — you can count on it. If you doubt me, just look around at what the majority of other business owners are doing in your industry.

    · How different are your competitors from each other? (My bet is there is no more than a 10 to 20% difference across the board.)

    · How different are you from your competitors?

    · Are you offering essentially the same services/products to the same market and experiencing the same financial rewards and constraints as everyone else in your industry?

If you don’t like your answers to these questions, then now’s time to make a change. Winning the game of business ownership, playing by your own rules takes a comprehensive strategy. But you can start setting your own rules by answering three simple questions:

    1. What could your company provide that your competitors do not, cannot do, or would not to do – even if they thought of it first?

    2. What’s considered “impossible” by the majority of people in your industry? How could you provide that service/product/solution IF it were really not impossible?

(Have you considered that maybe your competitors are talking about how “impossible” something is to implement because they don’t want you to create the solution, and take away their market share?)

    3. What are consumers regularly complaining about in your industry? How can you provide solutions to their complaints?

Take action now!

Take your answers to these three starter questions and begin to mold your operational systems, marketing, and pricing structure around the answers you come up with. You can boost your profits and your personal fulfillment at the same time – starting by setting the rules of your own game.

When you set your own rules in this manner, you will take a commanding lead in your industry, niche, or profession. You’ll be setting the rules around what consumers want instead of what company in your industry find to be “the norm.” And when you help enough other people get what they want, you’ll get more of what you want!

So if you want to win big in life, stop playing your game by other people’s rules. Life presents enough challenges, why create more for yourself by trying to play by other people’s rules. Step up and take a look at the game you’re playing, confirm you’re on the right field and reset the rules.

If you’re not on the “right field” playing a game that’s really in alignment with your in-born skills, talents and passions, then stop taking what life (and your business) is handing you and have your business coach help you create a game with rules that work for you.

Three Keys to Building a Salable Small Business

March 11th, 2005· Filed Under: General Posts · Small Business Systemization · Business Owner's Mindset · Building Your Financial Fortress

It’s 6 a.m. Hawaii time as I begin my phone appointment with a new business-coaching client from Pennsylvania. Joe sounded frustrated as he related his story. “I’m 57 and I’ve been running my own company for 30 years. Now it’s time to sell my business, and I realize it’s not worth what I thought.”

Like so many other small-business owners, Joe was utterly dismayed why something he had worked so hard at for so many years had so little value. The good news is that it’s a story that you can totally avoid telling yourself.

After selling two businesses and helping many other owners prepare their small businesses for sale, I’ve found there are three basic keys to building a high-value company. Here’s a quick overview.

Key #1: Cash Flow

When it comes to valuing a business, cash flow begins with “net” taxable income. Then you add back things like depreciation, taxes paid, owner’s salary/benefits, and other ownership “perks.” A multiple is then applied against your cash flow based on your industry and geographic area.

Although those “add backs” will always be a factor in any small business, when you’re preparing to sell — the cleaner you can make your cash flow the better. Start backing off your perks two to three years out from when you intend to sell your business.

Key #2: Retained Earnings

This is the profit that your company keeps each year. A track record of steadily increasing retained earnings not only increases the value of your business, it also lowers the risk potential for buyers.

Here’s how it works for most small businesses. Owners often begin in the red when they start up. By the third year, most businesses will reach a breakeven point. Then a year or so after, the business begins to show retained earnings.

That amount will range from a couple thousand dollars to 10,000 or more depending on your industry. But what’s important is that from then on, your books should show a steady climb in your retained earnings.

Key #3: Operational Systems

Formalized systems for hiring, managing, marketing, and operations are critical in creating a high-value business. Having policy and procedure manuals, written operational systems, and customized software systems will not only improve the profitability of your company — they will turn your small business into an asset that someone will want to buy.

Without formalized systems, all you have is a “job.” And no one wants to buy a job!

If you want to build a salable small business, you need to start taking action now

Put together an advisory team with your business coach, CPA, and a business broker. Develop a plan, and then work that plan.

The sooner you do it, the more value your company will have when it comes time to sell. And, the more rewarding business ownership will be for you until that time comes.

About the Author: John-Paul Micek and his partner Deborah Cole Micek are Business Growth Coaches. They help small business owners like you, achieve profit-doubling growth in one-third the time it would take to do on your own.

In just 12-months with your membership in the www.BusinessOwnersCoachingClub.com you can bridge the digital divide and transform your small business into a click-and-mortar powerhouse that delivers the profits, personal fulfillment, and free time you want.

Addicted to online networking

March 9th, 2005· Filed Under: General Posts · On-Line & Off-Line Marketing · Sales Strategies for Small Business · Small Business and the Internet · Small Business Start up · Business Owner's Mindset

I just finished an all-weekend long marathon of online networking at the monthly meet-and-greet with the International Virtual Women’s Chamber of Commerce (IVWCC) association.

Whew! My brain feels more full than it ever has as any type of in-person networking event, because I learned many things from experts in their own industry. When a question is posed, you may share your 3 top resources that you use or know about. But then you get 3x’s 33 or more additional resources or experiences with a particular product/service from everyone in the network who has something to contribute.

All I have to do with these wonderful resources, is copy/paste the information or website link into my ongoing list of business resources, and voila! I’m 900% more resourceful for my clients when they have a question on that particular subject.

In addition to my brain being jazzed up, my heart is also satisfied, because I connected with many dynamic women throughout the event. We took our public chats into a one-on-one email conversation, and turned a few of them into telephone chats too.

The result?

I found trustworthy, competent vendors to give my business to, AND many found me to serve as their trusted business advisor, filling the role of their business coach.

Not bad for never having to leave my comfy Aeron chair in my ocean view home office! (Except to go to the gym, which was a worthwhile trip.)

Now THAT’S what I call “Power Networking” at its best!

Think of all the resources you get through online LIVE networking events. Then, just try to imagine how that would translate in “the real world”…

You really have two options at LIVE events:

1) You either have to remember everything you’ve learned after participating in a LIVE in-person networking event, (regardless of how much wine you’ve had at the function).

2) Or the alternative to remembering while drinking… looking like a total nerd w/ a pad and pen at the party, stalking past every conversation, writing down all the great resources they have to share, while pushing up your glasses w/ the tape wrapped around the center, showing your utter frustration and disgust at your inability to listen to every conversation at once!

All the while, munching on appetizers - or as we say in Hawaii, “pu-pu’s” and holding a drink at the same time! And just try to look cool as you attempt to contribute - but then you choke on the piece of buffalo wing that some smart-alec thought would be a good choice for a party where handshaking is required! Sheesh! No wonder I’m turning into a North Shore hermit.

There’s really no comparison. Online networking makes one look much cooler AND makes one way smarter and more resourceful at the end of the day. Not to mention all the energy savings since you don’t have to drive anywhere! I went an entire month of generating business without ever having to pull my Z3 out of the garage.

Imagine it, and then you’ll see why there’s a growing epidemic of online-networking junkies!

Post a comment if you can relate. I need a support group to know I’m not alone. :-D

Enjoy Life,

Deborah Cole Micek

Business Success Begins in the Brain©

March 8th, 2005· Filed Under: General Posts · Small Business and the Internet · Small Business Start up · Business Owner's Mindset

This past Sunday, a mini-version of this article was published in our weekly column of the Star Bulletin newspaper of Hawaii, and below is the longer version for our subscribers who “want more” details on the topic and the coaching tips we provide below.

By Deborah Cole Micek & John-Paul Micek

Who has the best chance to become successful?

Many people would answer

that it’s someone who comes from a wealthy home, is intelligent, and knows the right people. But the facts show us something quite different.

Most “net-worth” millionaires are the exact opposite of popular stereotypes held for the rich and famous. In fact, many American success stories reveal strategies that go against “conventional wisdom.”

(Which is not wisdom at all, but simply sayings that make people feel better about their current position in life.)

Take the trite saying, “It’s not what you know but who you know.”

Every time someone says that, it drives me up a wall! If you’re saying this (to others or to yourself,) you’re programming yourself to remain in a box. It’s robbing you of the full measure of success you were created to achieve.

Do you think Sly (Sylvester Stallone) would’ve ever reached the level of success he has reached if he believed that saying? He was originially turned down by over 1,000 agents before getting someone to even consider his script for Rocky. He certainly didn’t know anyone in Hollywood when he was first starting out.

Look at Oprah Winfrey for another example. From an abusive childhood to the first black woman in America to become a billionaire, she certainly didn’t get any breaks by “knowing the right people.” She made her own breaks with her focus, charisma, and determination.

Fighting the “old boys network”

Even if you’re in an industry that’s ruled by the “old boys network,” keep in mind, there’s always a way!

You must continually ask yourself how you can go around, over, under the wall that’s currently blocking you from reaching the other side. You may even need to reinvent the existing system (like William Porter did in the financial industry with ETrade.)

Is there anyone you know in your industry who became successful because their charisma, determination and attitude? These visionary leaders pop up in every industry imaginable.

How can you model their approach for success in your industry?

Begin by thinking innovatively by asking productive questions like, “How can I get to know the people who have influence with my target market?”

Then follow up by taking more action than ever before!

You alone determine your level of business success

Your level of success is determined first by the quality of your thoughts and the types of questions you continually ask yourself.

Everything we do begins first with a thought.

Unfortunately, for most of us, we do many things out of habits we’ve formed at a very young age. And then, we never give our actions any additional thought; instead we go on auto-pilot.

Just like walking, swimming or driving a car, our actions become part of the routine for our everyday lives. We don’t think about how we walk across the room, we just automatically do it.

Yet, your brain continues to send over a million separate messages to your body in order for you to perform this simple action. It’s exactly the same thing with success.

The quality of your internal questions will determine your business innovation and success.

The Coaching Corner:

What type of questions do you ask yourself on a regular basis?

If you’re asking questions like, “Why does this always happen to me?” it’s very likely you’ll get poor answers (and pitiful results.)

If you continually “beat yourself up” anytime you don’t make a sale or a marketing approach brings poor results, you are programming your brain with the message that you don’t “deserve” to earn a lot, and will cease being creative. This translates into a feeling that is often described as “being burnt out” or “unmotivated”.

Instead you must reprogram your mind by asking innovation producing questions. Any time something doesn’t go according to plan, ask yourself an empowering question like, “What can I learn from this experience?” and “How can I do this better next time?”

By doing this you’ll actually stimulate your mind by giving your brain a homework assignment. You’ll be amazed at the results you get the next time you tackle the same project. And you’ll be thrilled with how much easier and more enjoyable it is.

Your brain ONLY responds to the instructions you give it. Start controlling the programming of your brain today and begin watching your profits, performance, and personal fulfillment spike like a thermometer in the Texas Summer sun.
